ISAAC GURLEY SELLERS, Jr.:

Born 24 May 1849 in AL.; died 26 Apr 1936 in Coolidge, Limestone Co., Tx.  Married Frances Letson 31 Aug 1865 - both were only 16 years old.  Frances Letson was born 24 Feb 1849 and died 1 Feb 1878 (est.).  Location of her burial site is unknown at this time.  Frances parents were David William Thaxton Letson and Susan Martin.  Information on the Letson connection can be found at http://tinyurl.com/336r32  [Click on the thumbnail photos to enlarge]. Isaac Gurley, Jr. and Frances had 7 children, two died at childbirth and daughter Jane died about age 15 from Typhoid.

1850 Jefferson AL census: Gurley Sellars (indexed) age 7/12, living with Gurley Sellars

1860 Jefferson AL census: Gurly Cellars (indexed) age 10 living with Gurly Cellars

1870 Jefferson AL census: Girley Selars living amongst Gurley & Delila, Simon, RJ & William.  They have a listed value of real estate.  Perhaps they bought a few acres from Gurley.

After Frances’ death, Gurley Jr. remarried Mary Savannah Holcomb 16 Dec 1878.  Mary had grown up on a neighboring farm.  She was born 25 Jul 1859 in GA. and died 26 Aug 1934 in Texas.

Gurley and Mary haven’t been located in the 1880 census so their whereabouts are unknown until they are found in Armour, Limestone Co, Tx in the 1900 census.  John Martin Sellers, Isaac Gurley’s brother, moved to Limestone Co., Texas around 1887.  Also, Isaac Gurley’s oldest son, Oscar, married Molly Boyd in Limestone Co., Texas in Nov 1889.  Perhaps Oscar and his brother Clem may have moved with their Uncle John or at least followed him to the area where he met and married Molly.

1900 Limestone Co. TX: Isaac G Sellers b. 1849 with wife Mary S. and children.

This may have influenced Isaac Gurley to move to Texas.  From the date and birth locations of Isaac Gurley & Mary’s children in the 1900 census, it appears they made the move to Texas after the birth of their son Virgil in AL in Aug 1890 & before the birth of their son Alvin in Texas in Nov 1892.  In the early 1900’s, they return to Jefferson Co. AL where they appear in the 1910 census in Jonesboro Town, Jefferson Co. AL.

1910 Jefferson AL census:  Isaac G Sellers with wife of 32 years, Mary S. and children.  He shows his parents as born in SC not NC for some reason.  He lists his occupation as a Watchman in the Ore Mines and that he could read/write English.

1920 Jefferson Co. AL: Indexed as J.G. Sellers: I.G. Sellers, with wife Mary and son Douglas.  Now shows parents from NC.  Occupation is Timberman for the TCS Railroad (I think).

Isaac Gurley has not been found in the 1930 census to date.  He and Mary returned to Texas sometime after the 1920 census and lived with or near his son Oscar Sellers in Coolidge, Texas until their deaths.  The date that they returned to Texas is unknown at this time.  Both he and Mary are buried at Prairie Grove Cem. near Mexia, Tx.
